Invisalign® vs Traditional Braces

Invisalign® or Braces? How to Tell Which is Best For You

Proven Invisalign and Traditional Braces Dentist in Temecula, CA

If you are looking into orthodontics options for your teen, it is important to consider Invisalign® vs. traditional braces for teens. You should also know what both solutions look like on a daily basis. Essentially, any orthodontic solution will move teeth by applying pressure. This pressure has to be placed on the right teeth at the right time so that gradually, they move into position. Both solutions do an excellent job. At the end of the day it really comes down to lifestyle, convenience, and what your teen will feel confident wearing.

Your Guide To Invisalign

Invisalign® is a series of clear aligner trays that cover the teeth, similar to a retainer or mouth guard, but they are much more discreet. At least every two weeks or so, the patient will switch to the next set in the series of Invisalign trays. With the custom aligners for each patient, Invisalign® will gradually push the teeth into the right position without causing significant amounts of pain. This can be over the span of months or years, meaning that an Invisalign patient can go through 20-50 aligners in the process.

Invisalign is great for patients with mild to moderate dental issues. If a patient has a more complex case, he/she may not be eligible for Invisalign. Patients that are eligible enjoy the fact that they can take out the aligners to eat, and that the aligners are transparent.

Traditional Braces 101

Traditional braces are made of a series of brackets, which are connected to each other by wires. Braces patients also will occasionally have to wear rubber bands that can help pull the teeth together. While this dental intervention can attract attention that some patients do not want, traditional braces can fix any dental issue, while Invisalign cannot.

Metal braces are a reliable solution for straightening your teeth that have been used by people for decades. In fact, your parents may have used them when they were teenagers. While they work well, the technology is similar in that you still need to have a metal bracket placed on each tooth with a wire threaded between them and secured with rubber bands. Some kids like how they can pick out fun rubber band colors to match their mood or a holiday. If that is not your idea of fun, metal braces may not be for you.
